In this paper we argue that a large gray area of information systems research exists, whose rele vance to the information technology artifact is subject to significant debate even among IS scholars who support the essential role of the IT artifact. As we explain, not explicitly addressing this gray area can have negative, although often inadver tent, effects on the innovative nature of IS re search; we explore this danger through three pitfalls. We then propose a stance of strategic ambiguity to deal with the gray area. Strategic ambiguity calls for deliberately withholding judg ment on the relevance of research in the gray area and acceptance of gray-area research provided it meets the excellence required by professional journals. We believe that strategic ambiguity benefits innovative IS research without harming the essential role of the IT artifact.
Gray Area

Example 1: The Segway Controversy
考虑下面三个研究问题:

显然1属于IS研究,2不属于。但是3,Segway是一类交通工具,但是却又包含智能化部分处理信息。Segway很难判断是不是属于IT artifact,所以是一类gray area。
当一个研究涉及一个很难分类的technological artifact,它就属于gray area。
Example 2: Shill Bidding in Online Auctions
考虑下面三个研究问题:
- 如何改进在线拍卖系统以促进潜在买家参与?
- 不同拍卖程序是否会导致不同的潜在买家参与?
- shill biding如何影响潜在买家参与?
1属于IS,2属于经济学研究。但是3,shill biding是指拍卖师伪装买家,以提高拍卖价的一种方式。或许第一反应这是经济学问题,但是往往线下拍卖会对shill biding有限制。线上的匿名环境给了shill biding空间,从这个视角看有IS元素。
当一个研究(1)将IT artifact放在显著且不可替代位置,(2)同时又和其他学科有很强联系,也属于gray area
Pitfalls in Operationalizing the Essential Role of the IT Artifact in IS Research
在判断研究是否属于IS时,应该足够小心。因为:
- 很难有一套标准适用于所有IS研究判断。
- 更多的自由度意味着更小的灰色区域限制。审稿人越多,其意见交集越小,对灰色区域的接纳就更低。
- 不处理灰色区域不会更糟糕。过于明确的标准,有可能将一些学者从IS中踢出去,会分裂IS社区。
